Humanity's Cosmic Voyages

Exploration Missions

From the dawn of the Space Age to interstellar space and deep infrared space telescopes. Trace the history of artificial satellites, lunar landings, and robotic planetary explorers.

1957

Sputnik 1

Target: Earth Orbit

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. Its radio beeps signaled the dawn of the Space Age and inspired the global space race.

1969

Apollo 11

Target: The Moon

NASA's Apollo 11 placed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface. "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" marked the first human footsteps on another world.

1977

Voyager 1 & 2

Target: Outer Solar System & Interstellar Space

Twin probes completed the grand tour of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to cross into interstellar space in 2012.

1990

Hubble Space Telescope

Target: Low Earth Orbit (Cosmic Deep Field)

Deployed into orbit by Space Shuttle Discovery, Hubble revolutionized astronomy by capturing clear images of distant nebulae, galaxies, and dark energy acceleration.

1997

Cassini-Huygens

Target: Saturn System & Titan

Spent 13 years exploring Saturn's ring system and icy moons. The Huygens probe successfully landed on methane-covered Titan, revealing rivers and lakes of liquid ethane.

2011 / 2020

Mars Rovers

Target: Gale & Jezero Craters, Mars

Curiosity and Perseverance landed in ancient Martian lakebeds, discovering organic molecules, ancient stream deposits, and launching the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars.

2021

James Webb Space Telescope

Target: Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange Point

The largest, most powerful infrared space telescope ever built. JWST peer back to the formation of the first galaxies over 13.5 billion years ago and analyzes exoplanet atmospheres.

2024+

Artemis Program

Target: Lunar South Pole

NASA's ongoing program to land the first woman and person of color on the Moon, establishing a sustainable human presence and preparing for future crewed missions to Mars.
